Only true federalism will save Nigeria, Ezeife declares

A former governor of Anambra state, Chukwuemeka Ezeife, has said Nigerians now have the change that they desired in 2015 which made them vote for President Muhammadu Buhari.

Buhari came with the change agenda on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the electioneering.

He won the election, but there are those who say the country has gone from bad to worse since he was sworn-in to office over a year now.

Ezeife is one of such people as he declared on Friday, September 16, 2016 that the country has moved “from frying pan to fire.”

The former governor, who spoke at a symposium organized by the Tunji Braithwaite Foundation in Lagos, said: “Those of you talking about change, the change has been delivered and it is from frying pan to fire.”

Ezeife maintained that the idea of Nigeria as a country has become very difficult because what currently operates is a creation of the military and not the people.

According to him, the various crises rocking the country are true reflections of the kinds of leaders the people have.

He said the solution lies in having a genuine federation where regions would exist. However, since the old regional government has been destroyed, the country can make do with the six geo-political zones, he said.

“We must all agree that the Biafra war is over. The states created to win the war can no longer form the basis that can sustain our economy,” he said while noting that the needed indices for an economic boost include power, water, transportation and ecological problems.

“The Nigerian military ruled and ruined the country; today, there is a total failure of the system.

“As long as we continue the way we are going, we will get to nowhere,” he added. “I am suggesting that we do what is necessary for the country to take its rightful place. Nigeria can become a superpower."

Ezeife also advocated for more women in politics arguing that men in Nigeria did contribute much to its destruction.

He said where 100 men are corrupt, less than five women are found to engage in the act and as such, women should now be more considered for positions in the country.
