Crisis Brews In Edo ACN Over Dissolution Of LG Caretaker Committees

Crisis is brewing in Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, in Edo State, following the dissolution of caretaker committees in the 18 local government councils of the state by the State House of Assembly.

The lawmakers announced the dissolution of the committees  after the House declared that the caretaker committees’ continued stay in office would amount to illegality. They also described the tenure of chairmen of the councils as a “child of circumstance.”

Vanguard learnt that the leadership of the ACN met at the residence of a top party leader in the state, where the issue of dissolution of the councils was discussed and it was agreed that the House could only dissolve the councils when the issue of Electoral Act and cases in court were resolved.

It was also agreed at the meeting that a date for elections into the 18 local government councils would be announced by the lawmakers after the dissolution of the House.

But, contrary to the agreement reached at the meeting, the lawmakers dissolved the councils without declaring a date for elections into the councils. A chieftain of the party who craved anonymity, described the dissolution as senseless and an attempt to cause unnecessary crisis in the party.

He said: “The agreement was that we had to sort out the suit which the former  Edo State Independent Electoral Commission, EDSIEC, filed against the state government on the constitution of a new EDSIEC by the governor, then the issue of  Electoral Act which will guide the conduct of the election.

“But these things have not been done and they went on to dissolve the councils. The lawmakers were supposed to announce a date for election at once. “What they have done now is to put a lot of people out of job without putting in place a date for election.”
