Edo Assembly Dissolves 18 LG Caretaker Councils

The Edo State Assembly yesterday dissolved the transitional committee executives in the 18 local government councils in the state.

The transitional committee executives were constituted by the state governor, Adams Oshiomhole in  October 2010 following the expiry of the tenure of the democratically elected council executives.

The dissolution was sequel to a matter of urgent public importance moved by Paul Ohonbamu (ACN Egor constituency).

The motion which was unanimously endorsed by the House noted that the caretaker committee was an aberration to democratic norms and values as being preached by the state government.

Besides, the House also ordered the Commissioner for Transport, Hon. Victor Enoghama, who was invited to come and render account of his ministry and to immediately revert to the fees approved by the House for traffic offenders.

Uyi Igbe, the speaker of the House, ordered the transitional committee executives to return all properties within their possession to the Head of Service at the various councils before the end of the day.

The lawmakers also declared all the offices of councillors, special assistants and all bodies set up by the executives dissolved.

Ohonbamu added that the caretaker committee, no matter how well they worked, cannot be tantamount to a true democratic system, which is the hallmark of Edo people.
