Peoples Democratic Party has asked the Action Congress of Nigeria to stop politicising the disasters in parts of the country.
The PDP said this in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, on Wednesday.
The ACN National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, had in a statement on Tuesday, blamed the Federal Government for the disasters.
It also described the President as a training President, who it said, ought not to have travelled outside the country at this critical period.
But the PDP condemned the statement, saying it had portrayed the ACN as an “opportunistic party.”
The statement stated, “In their desperate attempt to remain heard, the party has once more thrown decency and the dignity of the human being to the winds.
“While the wounds of the disaster are still festering, the ACN has seen yet another window to play politics and grandstand rather than sympathise with the people over this unfortunate happening.
“The ACN in its statement even went to ridiculous extents like condemning the closure of the Abuja-Lokoja road which is a precautionary measure taken to save lives, following this disaster.”
Metuh said while the PDP would continue to welcome criticisms to keep it on its toes, the ruling party would not succumb to politicking from “political jobbers”.
He said, “The ACN’s unnecessary politicisation of this is an indication of their insensitivity to the plight of the victims.
“They would rather scavenge for political capital while the victims remain homeless, hungry and prone to diseases.
“We wish to remind the ACN that natural disasters are not restricted to any particular parts of the country.”
Metuh said Lagos State, which is under the ACN, had suffered multiple cases of flooding in the past.
