Ministerial Appointment Won't Save Amaechi - Rivers Govt

The Rivers state government has said the former state governor Rotimi Amaechi will still be prosecuted in spite of being nominated as a minister.

Speaking on Tuesday, October 6, Opunabo Inko-Tariah, the special adviser on media and publicity to the Rivers state governor said ministers do not enjoy immunity.

He said: “The nomination of Rotimi Amaechi doesn’t in any way deprive the recommendations of the Justice Omereji’s panel of its effect. Ministers have no immunity and so can’t be insulated from prosecution if and when found guilty of any ineptitude.”

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state has set up a judicial commission of inquiry to probe the sale of assets belonging to the state by the immediate past administration of Amaechi.

Amaechi was one of the 21 ministerial nominees sent to the Senate for screening by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Inko-Tariah stated that he could not say if the Justice Omereji-led panel report was in favour of Amaechi or not as he had no idea of its content, The Punch reports.

The former governor has refused to appear before the panel, saying it was a witch-hunt and a ploy by Governor Wike and the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state to damage his reputation.

Meanwhile, there was jubilation in the camp of the Rivers State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress over Amaechi’s nomination as a minister by President Muhammadu Buhari.
