The Rise And Rise Of The New Lagos Speaker
Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, a fourth term member of the Lagos state House of Assembly and representative of Agege Constituency 1, was elected as the speaker for the eighth session of the state Assembly.
Obasa, a lawyer, lawmaker, a patriot and party man, is one of the most senior parliamentarians in the Lagos state House of Assembly today.
He has been described as a man with impeccable legislative experience, a brilliant legal mind, a grassroots mobilizer, energizer and organizer, a responsible husband and father, a man of great honour and integrity.

Obasa was born on November 11, 1972, and began his early education at St Thomas Acquinas Pry School, Surulere, Lagos after which he proceeded to Archbishop Aggey Memorial Secondary school, Mushin, Ilasamaja, Lagos.
He had his university education at the prestigious Lagos State University (LASU) where he obtained an LLB degree in law in the year 2006 and thereafter enrolled immediately at the Nigeria Law School, Lagos for his BL.
After the restoration of civil democratic rule in 1999 and the formation of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), Obasa contested for the post of a councillor, which he won and served his people in the old Agege local government area between 1999 and 2002 in that capacity.
In the year 2003, he contested for the House of Assembly seat in his constituency. He secured the mandate of his people in that election. In 2007, having delivered on his promises to his people, that mandate was renewed as Obasa was again re-elected to the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Yet again, in the 2011 elections, Obasa was re-elected for another term of four years to serve as a legislator.
He contested the House of Assembly seat for the fourth time in the 2015 elections and again secured the mandate of his people.
At the local government council while serving as a councillor, Obasa served as the chairman of the House Committee on Education as well as a member of various other committees.
Towards the end of his term at the local government, he was made the deputy leader of the Legislative Council.
At the state House of Assembly, he served in various capacities, as a member of several committees such as the Committee on Lands and Housing as well as Physical Planning, to mention a few.
He served as the chairman of the House Committee on Rural Development, and for six years as a pioneer chairman of the House Committee on Public Accounts (Local Government)
He was also the chairman of the House Committee on Budget and Economic Planning of Lagos.
Under his leadership as the Chairman of the Public Accounts (Local Government) committee, the ratio of recurrent expenditure to capital expenditure was reviewed in favour of capital expenditure for our local governments and local council development areas (LCDAs) to witness a rapid infrastructure development.
Likewise, sanity was brought to the financial transactions of all LGs and LCDAs in the state.
He first contested elections as a local government delegate to the state Congress during the Social Democratic Party (SDP) era to elect the party's candidates.
He was elected a zonal chairman under the UNCP for Alaagba Zone, Agege. He became a member of the Ward Executives for Ward E, Agege local government during the UNCP era.
He served as the chairman of the Campaign Committee for Local Government Election for the Alliance for Democracy in Agege local government until he was himself elected a councillor in ,1999.
Obasa has attended both local and international trainings and seminars. He was at the prestigious Cambridge University, United Kingdom, for much coveted leadership training and also Slough University in the United Kingdom for managerial capacity building training.
He similarly attended the prestigious National Conference of State Legislators (NCSL) in the United States.
Obasa had the benefit of attending yet another prestigious training session on lawmaking at the British parliament and at different times attended the Conference of Commonwealth Parliament programmes both at the international and continental levels.
He equally had the rare privilege of being awarded a Certificate of Excellence by the State of Georgia in United States in recognition of his outstanding contributions towards the development of democratic processes in Lagos state in particular and Nigeria in general.
