Court Acquits PDP Lawmaker Of Assault Charge

A Magistrates Court in Kano yesterday discharged and acquitted a member of the House of Representatives, Tijjani Abdulkadir Jobe, of charges of assault and mischief.

The lawmaker, who is representing Dawakin Tofa/Rimin Gado/Tofa federal constituency, was accused of attacking the treasurer of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state, Alhaji Sani Abdullahi Tofa, last year.

The court heard that the complainant had gone to Tofa Police Station on April 11, 2011 to secure the bail of a suspected political thug, when he was accosted by the legislator who allegedly slapped him and tore up his shirt, leaving him with only trousers. The Assembly member however denied the allegation.

Delivering judgement, Senior Magistrate Aminu Usman Fagge of Tofa Magistrates Court acquitted the accused person, saying the prosecution failed to prove the case.
