Presidency, Governors Set Up Committee To Resolve FAAC Crisis

The Federation Accounts Allocation Committee is enmeshed in crisis over revenues sharing among the three tiers of government.

President Goodluck Jonathan met with some governors in a closed-door with on Monday night over crisis at Federation Accounts Allocation Committee, FAAC, on sharing of revenue accruing to the three tiers of government.

Speaking on the outcome of the meeting held at the State House which ended around midnight, presidential spokesman, Reuben Abati, told journalists that a four-man committee was set up to resolve the crisis.

During FAAC meeting on Thursday, Commissioners for Finance in the states had staged a walk out on the Minister of State for Finance, Yerima Ngama, who chaired the committee meeting.

Abati said the president summoned the meeting with governors to resolve the impasse. Abati did not comment on the crisis in the Nigeria Governors Forum which led to only 16 governors meeting with themselves before meeting with the president. Only governors loyal to Plateau Governor and self-proclaimed chairman of the NGF, Jonah Jang, attended Monday’s governors meeting prior to the meeting with the president.

Abati said the four-member reconciliation committee comprised Governors Isa Yuguda of Bauchi, Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta, Ibrahim Dankwambo of Gombe, and Peter Obi of Anambra; with all four of them being supporters of Mr. Jang.

He said the committee would meet with the Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, and Mr. Ngama on Tuesday to resolve the matter.

Abati said the State House meeting was “very friendly” and that the governors were happy at the President’s disposition to resolving the matter.

He said a statement would be issued at the end of the committee’s meeting, adding that more than 25 governors or their deputies attended the meeting where the decision to resolve the matter was taken.
