National Coordinator of Forum for Justice and Human Rights Defence, FJHD, Delta State, Mr. Oghenejabor Ikimi, weekend, called on President Goodluck Jonathan to dissolve the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, NGF, as activities of the forum had become a threat to national unity.
In a statement in Warri, Delta State, he said: “I have noted the recent chaotic chairmanship election of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum cum the factions that emanated from the said exercise. I call on the Presidency to immediately disband the body in the interest of national unity and security as the recent activities of the said forum are a threat to national stability.
“Let me say that the 1999 Constitution, as amended, never contemplated a body such as the Nigeria Governors Forum and as such, the body is illegal and unconstitutional. I, however, agree that Nigerians have a constitutional right to form or belong to a body, group or association of their choice, nevertheless, the above rights would be curtailed when the activities of such a body, group or association is a threat to national unity and stability as in the instant case of the Governors Forum.
“Apart from being funded with public funds, NGF is now being polarised with the Rotimi Amaechi- led faction and the Jonah Jang- led faction embroiled in- fighting, the activities of the said body can now be described as clandestine and inimical to national unity.”
