Patience Jonathan Wants First Lady Roles Included In Constitution

Patience Jonathan, was on Friday  in Yenagoa sworn in as a Permanent Secetary to the Bayelsa state Government. She becomes the first wife of a serving president or governor to be sworn in as permanent secretary.

Mrs. Jonathan, alongside 18 other permanent secretaries, was sworn in by the Chief Judge, Justice Kate Abiri at the StateBanquette Hall Government House in Yenagoa.

The appointment of the First Lady which has caused controversy. Did not faze the governor Sekibo Dickson who says he followed due  process in the cause of selecting the permanent secretaries.

Patience Jonathan who spoke for the permanent secetary's, said that their appointment is a confirmation of Dickson administration’s resolve to transform the state economically, socially and politically.

She said that she was sad that the 1999 Constitution did not  recognise the office of the First Lady and assigns her no role. She asked that this be corrected in the constitution review, so that when a president’s wife leaves office, she, like her husband, can enjoy retirement benefits.

She pointed out that first ladies  should be  assigned constitutional responsibilities.
