National Chairman, Conference of Nigeria Political Parties, Alhaji Balarabe Musa, has described the presidential system of government as the best for Nigeria.
Musa said this on Monday in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja.
He was reacting to calls by some Nigerians for a change from the presidential system of government to the parliamentary model.
A parliamentary system is a system of democratic governance of a state in which the executive branch derives its democratic legitimacy from, and is held accountable to the legislature.
“We are worried about the negative state of the nation, particularly the level of corruption, killings and criminal waste of resources, failure to have free, fair and transparent elections,’’ Musa said.
The ex-governor said the problems could not be solved by merely returning to the parliamentary system of government simply because it is cheaper.
“We should do something about the high level of corruption in Nigeria; if this is done we will achieve peace and progress.
“The presidential system should continue because it gives sufficient power to those who can deal with the problems of the country,” he said.
