Okonjo-Iweala Silent On Ezekwesili’s Challenge

The Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on Friday kept mum about the challenge thrown at her by a former Vice-President of the World Bank, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili.

Ezekwesili had claimed in a series of tweets released on Thursday that the finance minister ‘snubbed’ her at the Future Awards Symposium lecture.

The former World Bank VP had prior to the lecture alleged that the country’s foreign reserves of $67bn were mismanaged.

She however re-inforced her claims via the tweets saying “Once again, I call for a debate on how oil revenue is being managed. Citizens have a right to know.

“I believe that the government owes citizens accountability on its management of oil revenue. Take advantage of my call for debate.

“My demand for a debate was born out of my realisation that the government was playing a game of distraction on the issue.

“Substance is that as a citizen, I demanded accountability for the run down and stagnation of the Foreign Reserves and Excess Crude Account.

“The minister knows that my speech had the foreign reserves. Mine was not a ‘sub’ and still is not. If the minister is confident of her facts, respond to my call for accountability.”

But when asked to react to the tweets by the former World Bank VP, the Senior Special Assistant to the finance minister, Mr. Paul Nwabuikwu, told our correspondent on the telephone that he had “no comment.”
