The Bayelsa House of Assembly tackled the Chairman of Brass Local Government Council, Nathaniel Ngo Sylva, and his principal officers, over their failure to produce evidence of the council’s Finance and General Purpose Committee (F&GPC) meetings.
The probe, according to the lawmakers, is on the heels of reports of misapplication and misappropriation of public funds by council chairmen in the state as well as impeachment and counter impeachment threats between the chairmen and councillors.
The lawmaker said the Assembly needed the evidence to authenticate the number of contracts awarded by the council, persons who tendered for such contracts and payment modalities.
But, Sylva and his principal officers who appeared before the House on Tuesday could not produce the needed documents. Another member, James Ayobia, representing Nembe constituency II, in his contributions wondered why the chairman and his officers failed to produce the documents despite the fact that they were told to do so.
Speaker of the Assembly, Kombowei Benson Friday, then directed the council chairmen to re-appear before the House on another date with 30 copies of evidence of their F&GPC meetings.
He stressed that the legislative arm of government is merely exercising its constitutional powers.
