After a thorough investigation, I have decided to reject the outcome of the recent election. I lament serious and unacceptable abnormalities which have reportedly transpired during the electoral process.

“I recommend fresh and transparent elections which will be officiated by a god-fearing and independent electoral commission,” he said.

Jammeh, who took power in a coup in 1994 has ruled the country for 22 years. In those years, he was acquired a reputation as a ruthless leader. Human Rights Watch accused him of using violence to silence critics ahead of the election.

He was defeated by Adama Barrow, who won more than 43% of the vote.

There was wild jubilation when he called his opponent to concede defeat, only for him to make a U-turn one week later.

However, the African Union has described Jammeh’s rejection of the outcome of the election as "null and void" since he had already conceded defeat.

He has been urged to facilitate a peaceful and orderly transition and transfer of power.
