NCC: Senate drops Buhari’s nominee already cleared

- The Nigerian Senate has embarrassed the presidency with a rather strange decision

- The Senate dropped a nominee of President Muhammadu Buhari already cleared twelve days ago

- The nominee is Chief Okoi Ofem Obono-Obla

A report by Vanguard indicates that the Nigerian Senate has dropped a nominee for the post of a non-executive commissioner on the governing board of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), after clearing him.

The nominee, Chief Okoi Ofem Obono-Obla from Cross River state was one of the nominees sent to the upper chamber by President Muhammadu Buhari before the Senate made a dramatic turn.

In a letter to President Buhari dated Tuesday, November 22 and signed by Senate President Bukola Saraki, Obono-Obla was listed as one of the three whose nominations were rejected by the Senate.

Obono-Obla, who is the special assistant to President Buhari on prosecution but attached to the ministry of justice, is however not taking the Senate's decision well.

The dropped nominee has described his ordeal as back-door removal.

Obono-Obla protested in an email sent to journalists, with the title: Can the Senate President unilaterally overrule the confirmation of a nominee by the Senate?

Part of the mail read: “The entire major electronic and print media organs in the  country, on November 17 and 18, 2016, carried the confirmation  by the Senate of the Board of Nigerian Communications Commission.

“Surprisingly and curiously, the Senate President, Senator Abubakar Bukola Saraki, in a letter dated November 22, 2016, to President Muhammadu Buhari, titled ‘Confirmation of Appointments,’ falsely stated that the Senate did not confirm the following nominees: Aliyu Saidu Abubakar; Pastor Ezekiel Yissa and Chief Okoi Ofem Obono-Obla.”

Meanwhile, Saraki has expressed the frustration of lawmakers over annual budgets which are not fully implemented.

Saraki made his stance and that of his colleagues known while giving his speech at the 2016 Awards/Dinner for Senators and Journalists covering the Senate on Wednesday, November 23.
